Apparent Networks Simplifies VoIP Testing

Apparent Networks, a provider of network monitoring services delivered via the cloud, has unveiled a new service that makes used of a Linux-based appliance to determine whether an enterprise network can stand up to the rigors of delivering voice over IP (VoIP) services.

According to Apparent Networks CEO Jim Melvin, AppView is a piece of software that runs on a “micro appliance” the size of a smartphone that plugs into a customer’s network. That appliance measures the amount of loss, latency and jitter on the network to determine its suitability for running VoIP applications, which Melvin noted is more indicative of a network's ability to run VoIP applications than the raw amount of bandwidth available.

AppView, said Melvin, eliminates the need to send a technician to the customer site. Instead, the appliance sends all the VoIP-related information concerning the network back to the Apparent Network monitoring service in the cloud.

In the future, AppView will be applied to other applications, including Web applications, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and cloud storage, Melvin added.

Pricing for AppView is $50 per month.
