Canonical Stakes Cloud Computing Claim

Canonical today formally announced version 10.4 of its commercial implementation of Ubuntu, which is an increasingly popular distribution of Linux.

According to Mark Shuttleworth, vice president of product design, this release serves as a foundation for a concept called “lite-ware” that enables IT organizations to quickly deploy Ubuntu as a platform that can easily scale across both private and public cloud computing platforms.

While interest in Ubuntu as a platform for private cloud deployments is nascent, Shuttleworth said Ubuntu has gained a lot of traction in public cloud platforms. And with the move to private cloud computing architectures, Shuttleworth said cloud computing will serve as a catalyst for change among enterprise customers that will come to value the ability to run robust applications on an easy to manage platform.

Canoncial CEO Jane Silber added that Canonical has also partnered with several providers of systems management platforms in the cloud, such as Eucalyptus and Dell, while also moving to deliver its Landscape set of management tools.

With the release of version 10.04 of Canonical’s Long Term Support (LTS) Server Edition, Canonical is moving to provide free maintenance updates and enhanced security in the operating systems.

The company adds that there are now over 100 organizations that are expected to certified to run on Ubuntus 10.04 LTS Server Edition
