Citrix Advances Mobile Virtualization

Citrix today advanced the virtualization state-of-the-art as it relates to mobile computing with an implementation of its XenClient software that is implemented using a bare metal Type 1 hypervisor.

Unlike Type 2 hypervisors that are implemented on top of an operating system, a Type 1 hypervisor is implemented on hardware. That means multiple virtual machines can then be run on top of a single hypervisor.

In the scenario laid out by Sumit Dhawan, vice president of product marketing for Citrix XenDesktop, IT organizations could allocate a laptop between an end user's personal and business applications by running each environment on top of its own virtual machine. This would not only serve to make the business application environment more secure, a Type 1 hypervisor environment generally offers higher levels of performance than Type 2 hypervisors.

Dhwan added that mobile virtualization will make it easier for companies to allow end users to bring their own PCs to work, or allow contractors to connect their own machines to the corporate network without compromising security policies.

In addition, Citrix launched XenVault, an online service that allows XenDesktop users to remotely store files.

The new XenClient and XenVault will be available in September as part of a Feature Pack Two module for XenDesktop.
