Cloud Computing for ECM Expands Cloning Capability

As part of an effort to create an application ecosystem around its content management system, SpringCM today released a new version of its cloud computing platform for enterprise content management (ECM).

Version 5.4 extends the ability of IT organizations using the platform to clone and share by now being able to share an object or widget developed for one application across a range of other applications residing on the platform.

SpringCM is a cloud computing service that seeks to provide IT organizations with an alternative to building and managing a wide variety of department applications using a range of different technologies. Instead, SpringCM officials argue that their model provides a common platform for building and distributing these types of ECM applications at not only a much lower cost, but also in a way that require minimal intervention from the IT department.

In previous version of SpringCM, customers could share applications, but with the new release SpringCM is providing a more granular ability to share and distribute specific application features.

In addition, the new release adds support for customized dashboards and an expanded ability to set retention policies for records stored within the system.

Mike, as a former SpringCM employee, I am partial to the technology, but having spent the previous 15 years at large legacy software companies, I know something about the differences and applaud the direction of SaaS-based "cloud" platforms. The end-user company or integrator can deliver applications at much lower cost, and equally important, can get their users to adopt the new solution much faster. Since time is money, this is important to me as a business owner. SaaS ECM also has significant advantages in the areas of infrastructure management, risk management and compliance.
