CloudStack provides an open source management framework that allows an IT organization to swiftly adopt a cloud computing framework for managing integrated sets of IT components and resources. Included in the CloudStack platform are tools for resource management, workload management and chargeback.
The CloudStack framework can be deployed on top of a heterogeneous set of virtual machines and includes the ability to create custom management templates and an application programming interface for linking systems managed by CloudStack with external public and private cloud computing systems.

According to Peder Ulander, chief marketing officer for Cloud.com, CloudStack was created by the same team of developers led by Cloud.com CEO Sheng Liang that did much of the original work on the Java virtual machine (JVM). As a startup company, Cloud.com is leveraging much of that experience to create a dynamic management environment for managing virtual and physical IT assets in the data center.
CloudStack will be available in a community edition, an enterprise edition and service provider edition with varying fees for ongoing technical support attached.
