CommVault is teaming up with Informatica today to try and solve that problem by integrating their respective archiving technologies in a way that allows subsets of unstructured data to be stored outside the core database in a readable format.
One of the biggest challenges associated with archiving structured data is that IT organizations could not make that information available to database users once it was archived. The end result was that the data was not immediately available anymore to any database applications that wanted to use it.
According to Simon Taylor, senior director for the Information Access Management Group at CommVault, the combination of Infomatica’s Data Archive software and CommVault’s Simpana archiving systems means that IT organizations can opt to archive seldom-used portions of a specific database in order to free up more primary storage space. That option could mean savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars for IT organizations struggling to keep pace with the growth of data.
The Informatica software works by converting database files into an XML format, which can then be transferred to a CommVault Simpana archiving system where they are indexed and made available in a read-only format.
