Coverity Maps Impact of Code Changes

As enterprise software becomes more integrated and complex, identifying the impact of certain changes to the underlying source code is becoming increasingly difficult.

To help tackle this problem, Coverity is adding in version 5 of its namesake code scanning tool the ability to map all the downstream effects a change to a particular piece of code will have on the entire application.

Other updates to the scanning tool include a new unified console for tracking defects and the ability to keep track of all those defects in a knowledge base that can be easily shared with multiple developers.

As more IT organizations turn to agile development processes that result in updates to software once a quarter, many of them are increasingly turning to scanning tools to automate much of quality control process, as opposed to relying on a tedious manual review process.

Coverity, along with tools from competitors such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard, is looking to combine what were once separate static and dynamic analysis capabilities in a single toolset as part of an effort to support agile development processes.

Coverity 5 is scheduled to be available in the first quarter.
