The extensions to the company’s SANSymphony-V software automatically reallocates blocks of disk storage to various devices in the pool of storage managed by SANSymphony-V based on policies set by the IT organization. Rather than manually having to perform these tasks, DataCore CEO George Teixeira says IT managers can now concentrate on higher-value tasks.
The ability to reallocate disk blocks across different devices isn’t all that new. But the ability to do it across storage systems from different vendors at a time when low-cost SAS drives are prevalent, creates a scenario under which IT organizations could significantly reduce their storage costs at a time when the data that needs to be stored is increasing exponentially.
Teixeira says IT organizations are looking for cost-effective approaches to reining in storage costs in a way that does not adversely affect performance while still leveraging their previous investments in storage hardware, as opposed to requiring them to purchase all new hardware as part of the forklift upgrade. The DataCore approach, said Teixeira, increases utilization rates on existing storage, while at the same time leveraging more automation to reduce the cost of administering that storage.
