Double-Take Partners with Amazon on Cloud

Double-Take Software, a provider of backup and recovery software enabled by advanced replication capabilities, is partnering with Amazon in an effort to deliver richer sets of recovery services via a public cloud.

While IT organizations have been using public clouds for backup and recovery applications for years, Double-Take Software CEO Dean Goodermote contends that those services as focused mainly on providing basic backup capabilities. The Double-Take Cloud service will be aimed primarily at customers that also have a requirement for speedy recovery, he said.

The Double-Take Software service is designed to reduce backup and recovery overhead by only replication changes within a specific file, rather than the entire file. That bi-directional approach to replication also speeds the recovery process by allowing IT organizations to prioritize specific sets of data for recovery from a cloud computing service.

Goodermote added that the Double-Take Software service includes the ability to backup and recover entire application images, not just raw files. Although Double-Take Software is not the first company to provide the ability to back up and recover data on a granular level, Goodermote said Double-Take Software is pioneering this level of backup and recovery on a public cloud platform. Pricing for the service, exclusive of the cost of an Amazon account, starts at $150 per month, said Goodermote.

When it comes to backup and recovery, the challenge most IT organizations have is that not many of them have prioritized their data and applications for the recovery process. The end result is that in the event of a crisis, the recovery times are extended because they don’t know which files to bring back online in order of importance in terms of business need or application dependency.

While the Double-Take Software service doesn’t provide that level of data management, it does provide the fundamental transport mechanisms for recovering data in order of importance once those determinations have been made.
