EMC today rolled out the Data Domain DD670, a new version of a data duplication system that is two times faster than the previous generation of the company’s offerings thanks to the inclusion of Intel 5500 series processors.
According to Shane Jackson, senior director of product marketing for EMC Backup and Recovery Systems, because Data Domain systems rely primarily on processors rather than disk drives for performance, every time a new processor comes out, the Data Domain product lines gets faster. And because processor upgrades happen more frequently than disk drives, the Data Domain product line has an inherent performance advantage over rival offerings over the long term, said Jackson.
That advantage, he said, is becoming particularly important as IT organizations continue to struggle with data that is growing exponentially in the enterprise.
According to EMC, the DD670 provides up to 5.4 TB per hour of aggregate inline deduplication throughput and can support up to 76 TB of raw capacity or up to 2.7 PB of logical capacity with 50x data reduction.
EMC also announced that it is making available 2TB drives across a range of Data Domain deduplication products in addition to a disk library for mainframe systems and a new virtual tape library system.
EMC acquired Data Domain last year.
