FalconStor Enhances VDI Performance

One of the things that holds up desktop virtualization adoption most in VMware environments is concern over performance.

FalconStor Software today moved to take that issue head on with the release of FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS) SAN Accelerator for VMware View. According to Fadi Albatal, vice president of marketing for FalconStor Software, this latest FalconStor offering leverages solid-state disk (SSD) technology to improve the performance of VMware View environments by a factor of 10.

Many virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments never move beyond the testing phase because of performance issues related to I/O across an extended network. The SSD technology deployed in this offering allows IT organizations to cache both reads and writes to storage to increase performance, while reducing the number of hard drives and network bandwidth that needs to be allocated to achieve acceptable levels of performance in a VDI deployment.

As the size of virtual images continues to increase over the life of the VDI deployment, Albatal says these performance issues only become greater.

In addition, FalconStor has included a self-service file recovery capability that allows end users to identify and recover any particular file without requiring an intervention from the IT department. Albatal says this is possible because FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View provides three tiers of data protection using snapshots, thin clones and replication of the entire VMware View environment.

The average cost of the FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View is $35 per user in an environment with 5,000 virtual desktops.
