Fortisphere Appliance Manages Virtual Services

As part of an effort to shift the conversation away from tools focused on managing virtual machines and toward managing the services that run on top of them, Fortisphere has announced that it has starting shipping a new Virtual Service Manager (VSM) offering.

The VSM appliance is designed to manage application workloads running on top of virtual machines by allowing IT organizations to enforce policies on performance thresholds related to virtual machine utilization. It can also be used to prevent the spinning up of new virtual machines unless certain performance thresholds are met.

Fortisphere CEO Siki Giunta says VSM stands in sharp contrast to most other virtualization tools that are focused on virtual machine maintenance activities. With VSM, Fortisphere is providing IT organizations with a tool that guarantees service levels will be maintained for applications that are dependent on those virtual machines.

In addition, VSM also provides the ability to identify resource-starved virtual machines and configure virtual machines to maintain optimal levels of performance, she said.

As virtualization continues to mature, IT organizations are now finding they need to contend not only with managing virtual machines and the physical servers they run on, but also the applications that make use of what amounts to a new layer of IT infrastructure.
