IBM Acquires Guardium Database Monitoring Tools

As part of an effort to broaden its data management services capabilities, IBM today acquired Guardium, a maker of database monitoring tools used to detect fraud and comply with various regulations.

According to IBM officials, the Guardium acquisition is intended to bolster both IBM’s data management tools and give the company access to a portfolio of tools that automate many of the compliance processes surrounding a database.

The Guardium tools are also cross-platform, which would help IBM expand its data management capabilities beyond its existing enterprise software portfolio, while at the same time better address growing customer concerns over data security.

With the addition of the Guardium tools, IBM is also continuing to expand its portfolio of IT process automation tools, which company officials have identified in the past as a strategic series of investments designed to lower the cost of enterprise computing.

IBM plans to integrate Guardium into the company’s Information Management Software portfolio of products and services.

Comments

By acquiring Guardium at such a significant multiple, IBM has validated the database security, risk and compliance marketplace. However, this acquisition adds yet another point solution to their already disparate database tools portfolio, and such an "rfp check box" architecture approach will not satisfy the integrated platform requirements of serious customers seeking enterprise wide data governance. -John Ottman, President & CEO, Application Security, Inc.
