IBM Moves to Acquire Datacap

IBM today added another element to its overall enterprise content management (ECM) strategy with the acquisition of Datacap, which provides software for capturing images of documents.

According to Paul Van Den Berg, head of IBM’s ECM product strategy, Datacap adds a missing component to IBM’s ECM lineup while also serving to bolster IBM’s green computing efforts by providing customers with a set of tools that reduces the amount of paper being consumed in the office.

Van Den Berg said the ECM category as a whole continues to evolve, with the primary components being document capture, document management and enterprise reporting tools. Web content management tools largely remain outside the scope of ECM, but are something that ECM tools need to integrate with.

ECM in the form of IBM's Filenet software is also quickly becoming a provider of tools that not only manage employees workflow and routing of documents, but also serve as the front-end components for accessing business process management systems.

Terms of the acqusition were not disclosed.
