IBM Rolls Out Tivoli Live Monitoring Service

IBM’s Tivoli group today rolled out a monitoring service based on its Tivoli software that will monitor a customer’s IT systems and related infrastructure.

Based on IBM’s existing Tivoli Monitor software and the company’s Composite Application Manager, the Tivoli Live Monitoring service is a cloud computing service aimed at off-loading routine IT management functions from the existing IT staff.

According to Dennis Quan, director of development for autonomic computing in IBM’s Software Group, the new service will be part of a series of IBM cloud computing initiatives in the systems and applications management arena.

The Tivoli Live Monitoring Service, said Quan, can be deployed using agents or agent-less technology, or in more likelihood, both scenarios depending on customer requirements. In addition to monitoring events to get alerts from IBM in real time, customers can also set up the service to keep track of historical performance data.

According to Quan, customers are struggling with doing the preventative maintenance work required to avert system failures simple because of a lack of information. With not enough IT personnel available to track everything, the IBM service provides customers with an effective alternative to setting up their own monitoring service, he said.
