Informatica Scoops Up Siperian

Continuing its effort to move up the middleware food chain, Informatica today announced the purchase of master data management (MDM) specialist Siperian.

Valued at $130 million, the deal is intended to expand Informatica’s footprint into a $1.5 billion market segment that is growing at 20 percent, explained Ivan Chong, Informatica senior vice president and general manager for data quality, in a video here.

Specifically, Informatica is interested in the Siperian approach to MDM because it provides the ability to consolidate views of multiple data types, is easy to configure, and rates different sources of data.

In the last several years, the quest to improve data quality has consumed many IT organizations as part of a general effort to increase the value of IT to the business. At the same time, middleware companies such as Informatica have been expanding the intelligence of their software as part of strategy to make their offerings more strategic to customers.

The acquisition of Siperian positions Informatica to deliver on those needs as emphasis in enterprise IT continues to shift toward points of data integration and away from specific application containers.
