Lenovo at CES Unveils Hybrid Notebook

In what may prove to be a sign of things to come, Lenovo at the Consumer Electronics Show is unveiling what it calls a “hybrid” notebook that comes with two separate processors that allow the unit to function as both a full-function notebook and a netbook.

The IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook relies on Intel Core Duo processors to run Windows 7 when connected to a corporate network, but can be used as a netbook by invoking an ARM processor running a flavor of Linux that Lenovo developed for use with its new Skylight smartbooks.

The 3.8 pound device features and 11.6-in screen that when removed turns the device into a netbook that switches over to the ARM processor using switching technology developed by Lenovo.

Lenovo has also included some software to synchronize data and applications as customers switch between the two environments. Priced at $1,000, the IdeaPad U1 is part of a large-scale consumer push by Lenovo and is designed to give customers the best of notebook systems and netbook systems without requiring them to purchase two separate systems.

The IdeaPad U1, which comes with a touch-screen user interface that can be configured in up to six separate panels, and a 128GB solid-state drive is scheduled to be available in June.
