Likewise Software today previewed a virtual appliance for VMware environments that makes it easier for Windows clients to access files running on Linux servers.
According to Likewise CEO Barry Crist, Likewise developed the appliance as an offshoot of the company’s effort to integrate open source systems with Active Directory via the CIFS protocol.
The Likewise CIFS appliance allows IT organizations to migrate files to faster virtual appliancs running on a Linux server as part of an effort to eliminate the need for legacy servers, said Crist. The appliance can be managed via vSphere and vCenter consoles from VMware.

CIFS is a file server technology for network file share access to the share folders over SMB1 and SMB2 protocols.
Likewise will be demonstrating the Likewise CIFS appliance at the VMworld 2010 conference next week.
