LogLogic Readies Virtual Appliance

Joining a growing trend of appliance manufacturers starting to offer virtual versions of those appliances, LogLogic today previewed an implementation of its log analyzer software running on top of a virtual machine.

According to Bill Roth, chief marketing officer for LogLogic, in the wake of server consolidation efforts many IT organizations now have excess physical server capacity. At the same time, these organizations want to consolidate the number of appliance devices they need to manage, as well. By making its software available as a LogLogic Log Management Virtual Appliance, customers can download a version of the company’s software that installs easily on top of a virtual machine.

In general, there’s a lot of controversy building over whether log analyzers are becoming features of larger security event information management (SIEM) software. But Roth argues that the number of applications where log analyzers are used, including everything from everyday systems management tasks to Web analytics, means the category will always be distinct because many customers don’t want to be forced to choose a specific log analyzer software package by a security vendor.

The LogLogic Log Management Virtual Appliance will formally be rolled out later this year.
