ManageEngine Goes Deep on VMware

ManageEngine is planting its flagship systems management software deep in the territory of VMware.

The company today will roll out version 8.7 of OpManager, which adds support for VMware application programming interfaces to the systems management platform.

According to Sreelesh Pillai, product marketing manager for OpManager, full support for VMware APIs, versus just relying on data gleaned from SNMP, means that OpManager can now track virtual machines as they move from one host to another.

In addition to adding support for the VMware API, ManageEngine in this release is adding an automatic Layer 2 mapping facility that discovers all the IT assets on the network.

Pillai says the ManageEngine goal of providing 90 percent of the functionality of rival systems management software at 10 percent of the price is now being extended to virtual machines at a time when responsibility for managing both physical and virtual servers is starting to converge.
