One of the major challenges with any “Big Data” architecture such as Hadoop is performance. While any Hadoop implementation can handle massive amounts of data, the performance of applications accessing that data can leave a lot to be desired.
Netezza and Cloudera, a provider of a commercial offering of Hadoop, plan to tackle that performance issue by developing a connector between Cloudera’s Distribution of Hadoop (CDH) and the data warehouse appliances developed by Netezza.
According to John Kreisa, vice president of marketing for Cloudera, what differentiates the Cloudera implementation most from the basic distribution of Hadoop is all the management tools and integration frameworks that Cloudera plans to wrap around Hadoop.
While Hadoop is gaining traction among large-scale Web 2.0 sites with lots of IT resources, more traditional IT organizations are looking for an option that comes complete with the management tools they have come to expect. Once they have those tools, however, many of them are expected to embrace Hadoop as an alternative to expensive database software, especially in scenarios where application performance involving data stored in Hadoop is not a primary issue.
