According to Peter Newton, director of product management for the commercial business unit at Netgear, the company is aiming these switches mainly at small- to medium-business customers and branch offices of larger organizations.
Faced with increased budget pressures, combined with the standardization of Ethernet switches, many IT organizations are looking for the best deal possible when it comes to acquiring next-generation Ethernet switches. In many instances that may mean replacing incumbent vendors with suppliers of networking technologies that provide most of the required functionality at substantially less cost.
With the rise of 10GB Ethernet servers, Newton adds that IT organizations of all sizes are now upgrading their networks to accommodate the increased bandwidth demands of those servers.
