Nimble Storage Unifies Data Storage

Nimble Storage today is unveiling the CS-Series, based on a new Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout (CASL) architecture that allows disk drives inside the same devices to be used for both primary and backup storage.

According to Nimble Storage CEO Varun Mehta, the company is leveraging Flash memory and new terabyte SATA disk drives to unify storage by writing data to disk using new compression algorithms and other intelligent approaches developed as part of the CASL architecture. And because the drives are all managed under a common architecture, data deduplication is instantaneous, said Mehta.

Mehta  says that incumbent storage vendors have a vested interest in keeping primary and secondary storage separate because they have huge investments in older storage architectures to protect. But as time and technology marches on, Mehta says it’s becoming more apparent that IT organizations can substantially reduce their operational overhead by unifying primary and secondary storage.

Pricing for the CS-Series, said Mehta, works out to about $3 per gigabyte for primary storage and 25 cents per gigabyte for secondary storage.
