Oracle Unveils In-Memory Database Platform

Oracle at its OpenWorld conference this week launched a new Exalytics Intelligence Machine that can run the Oracle SQL database, the Oracle TimesTen database and the Essbase online analytic (OLAP) database in memory.

Like other Oracle appliances, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said during the conference's opening keynote that the Exalytics in-memory appliance is based on the same parallelized IT infrastructure that leverages Infiniband storage technologies and Sparc processors. The software that runs on the machine, he added, is based on the in-memory technology that Oracle acquired when it purchased the TimesTen database technology in 2005.

In addition, Ellison said the Exalytics platform will pre-store the most frequently used queries using heuristics technology that Oracle has developed to optimize performance.

Oracle is positioning Exalytics as a direct competitor to SAP’s High Performance Analytics Appliance (HANA) platform and appliances based on Power series processors that IBM has developed.
