Permabit Brings Deduplication to Primary Storage

If Permabit Technology Corp. has its way, the data storage crisis will be a thing the past before the end of the year.

The provider of data management software that is used widely by a number of storage vendors is announcing Albireo, its latest implementation of data optimization software that is specifically designed to ease the escalating data storage crisis.

Albireo for the first time will allow customers using the software to implement data duplication in primary storage systems. That means that redundant data can be eliminated in microseconds before it ever gets to secondary storage, thereby eliminating much of the need for data deduplcation on disk and tape backup systems, said Permabit CTO Jered Floyd.

As part of the emphasis on reducing the amount of storage required by IT organizations, the Albireo system can also reduce the size of VMware images by 90 percent or more, said Floyd.

Other major new features of Albireo include support for unified storage across file and block level systems and the ability to process 140 MB per second per available processor core.

Albireo, which is available only through storage array vendors, is expected to show up in commercial storage systems before the end of the year.
