PMC-Sierra Boosts SSD Throughput

PMC-Sierra today will unveil a multi-core platform for managing RAID-level storage that leverages multi-threaded processing to significantly boost the I/O performance of solid-state drives.

At a time when many IT organizations are struggling to keep pace with demand for I/O throughput from multiple virtual servers running on high-density blade servers, the BR5225-80 RAID adapter can reach performance levels of up to 300,000 IOPs while connecting up to eight SAS/SATA ports to a PCI Express bus on a standard Intel-class server.

Under a joint development agreement with IBM, the BR5225-80 RAID controller marries IBM RAID stack technology with multicore processors from MIPs Computer Systems on a RAID-on-Chip architecture, dubbed MaxRAID, that is similar to other system-on-a-chip architectures that have begun to permeate other aspects of enterprise computing, said Zaki Hassan, director of enterprise product marketing for the enterprise storage division of PMC-Sierra.

Pricing for the BR5225-80 RAID controller starts at $495 to OEM customers.
