Progress Software rolled out today an upgrade to its enterprise service bus (ESB) software that adds support for lightweight REST interfaces for integrating applications.
Dan Foody, vice president of product management for enterprise business solutions at Progress said that with the release of Sonic 8, Progress is trying to help IT organizations strike a balance between application integration methodologies. While most IT organizations rely on some form of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), lightweight REST interfaces that were made popular with developers of Web 2.0 applications are finding their way into the enterprise mix.
In addition to adding support for REST interfaces, Sonic 8 has been enhanced to allow developers to upgrade any component tied to the ESB, or even the ESB itself, without having to take the ESB offline. That capability is known as the Continuous Availability Architecture.
Finally, the new release also adds support for Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs) as a default programming model.
