Quantum Simplifies Secondary Storage

Quantum has unveiled a Fibre Channel appliance for backup and recovery that includes replication and data deduplication capabilities.

The DXi6700 includes virtual tape library (VTL) software and can back up 3.5 TB per hour for a total of 56 TB of disk storage capacity.

According to Steve Whitner, product marketing manager for Quantum, the DXi6700 is aimed at mid-size organizations that need an effective approach to managing backup and archiving via a single appliance. Many IT organizations today are struggling with separate storage systems to manage both backup and archiving. The DXi6700 appliance provides an effective approach to handling both tasks via a single integrated management console, he said.

Because the DXi6700 also includes replication and data deduplication software, the appliance is designed to be a turnkey system that IT organizations can easily deploy and manage, said Whitner. And because Quantum appliances write directly to disk without having to invoke backup servers, the DXi6700 is designed to help IT organizations close backup windows at a time when the amount of data that needs to be managed is spiraling out of control.

Pricing for the DXi6700 starts at $159.000
