Riverbed Extends Mobile Acceleration Reach

Taking note of the increased diversity of corporate desktops, Riverbed Technology has added support for Macintosh systems, virtual desktops from Citrix and new protocols from Microsoft to version 3.1 of Steelhead Mobile.

Steelhead Mobile is a software-only approach to wide-area network (WAN) optimization that Riverbed developed to specifically address the needs of mobile clients. The rest of the Steelhead lineup consists of physical and virtual appliances meant to be placed either alongside or inside a remote server.

Joe Ghory, Riverbed senior product marketing manager, said as IT organizations embrace desktop virtualization, they are encountering latency issues when they attempt to deploy these types of solution across a WAN. Riverbed, he said, is one of the first WAN-optimization providers to address this issue.

In addition to providing support for Citrix virtual desktops and Macintosh systems, the new release also adds support for Microsoft Exchange 2010, new MAPI encryption services from Microsoft and the online editions of Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint.
