Sentilla Expands Reach of Power Management Software

Sentilla, a provider of energy management tools for the data center, expanded the reach of its software today to include an approach that allows IT organizations to effectively measure the power consumption of systems that lack meters that track energy usage.

According to Sentilla CEO Bob Davis, the vast majority of servers used in the enterprise have no metering capability,  as only recently introduced high-end systems have been configured with meters.

Announced today at the Data Center World Conference, version 3.0 of the Sentilla Energy Manager relies on an inference engine that deduces the amount of energy being consumed by a specific server by analyze the total amount of energy being consumed in the data center and the information the application gathers about application workloads from the agents of systems management applications already running on those servers.

Deducing the amount of power being consumed in the data center has become a delicate art as IT organizations struggle with limited availability of power, especially in major cities. The Sentilla Energy Manager also helps IT organizations manage their carbon output by identifying servers that consume the most amount of power.

Pricing for the Sentilla software is based on the number of devices in the data center, which typically averages out to be about $100 per device per year, said Davis.
