SGI Opens Up Data Center Containers

SGI, the combined entity that was formed when Rackable Systems acquired Silicon Graphics, today rolled out an open universal data center container along with a new dual row unit.

The latest incarnation of the SGI ICE Cube containers adds support for SGI supercomputers, SGI storage products, a full array of third-party products and technologies, and a choice between using water or air-cooled techniques to control the overall temperature of the container.

According to Bill Mannel, SGI vice president of product marketing, the concept of using a container to house the data center is becoming more appealing as customers continue to reevaluate the real estate costs associated with building and maintaining their own data centers. In addition, the containers are designed by industry experts in a way that optimizing power and cooling requirements.

Mannel said the latest iterations of the SGI containers take a more open approach to the design of the containers, which means customers are not locked into SGI equipment if they buy the SGI containers.

The new dual row containers are available now, while the universal row implementation is scheduled to be available in the third quarter.
