The ongoing management of a diverse portfolio of smartphones may be about to get easier following the release of version 6.5 of Sybase’s Afaria mobile device management platform.

With the new release, Sybase is adding support for managing iPhones from Apple and the ability to encrypt data on phones from Nokia.

The latest update also includes device identification and search enhancements, wipe and lock control options, and additional profile settings. Security has also been expanded through the addition of integrated antivirus and firewall components as well as new application controls and data security management features specific to the Windows Mobile platform. Smartphones have become essential to many workers' daily routine, so much so that IT organizations must develop a plan to manage data access and security while recognizing that users are always going to be pushing for the newest, coolest technology.

In addition, IT organizations managing these devices have become acutely aware of data security issues associated with lost phones. As a result, more IT organizations are investigating ways to not only remotely manage smartphones, but also wipe data off the devices remotely in the event they are lost or stolen.
