Teradata Sees a Real Need for Speed

Enterprise data warehousing provider Teradata is feeling the need for speed, judging by its latest release. Teradata has unveiled the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2580, which the company says delivers up to two times the performance of the previous version.

Data Warehouse Appliance 2580 features 1 TB drives, in addition to the current 300-GB and 450-GB drives, allowing it to scale from two TB to over 500 TB  of user data. A member of the Teradata Purpose-Built Platform family, the new data warehousing solution features Teradata Database 13, with Intel Xeon Nehalem processors that are capable of hyper-threading and providing three times the amount of memory.

Teradata says by combining Database 13 with the Data Warehouse Appliance, it provides users with improved query optimizer performance and in-database data mining and geospatial capabilities. Other benefits Teradata cites for its newest solution include simplified, step-by-step documentation, single-step data loading, expanded customer support, and co-residency capability that allows 2580 users to work in tandem with previous and future versions of the appliance without refreshing hardware platforms. Furthermore, Teradata is positioning the appliance as energy-efficient due to a heat-reducing architecture.

Enterprises across all industry verticals are dealing with a continually growing explosion of data which needs to be sorted, categorized, stored and mined. Enterprise data warehouse customers will surely appreciate the 2580’s enhanced storage capabilities and processing speed. It will be interesting to see how soon the next storage/processing speed upgrade is needed.

In mid-2010, Teradata will be adding a new all solid-state drive appliance called the Teradata Extreme Performance Appliance.
