A thin client device that connects back to servers over a universal serial bus (USB) connection rather than Ethernet has been unveiled by NComputing Inc.The Model U170 gives IT organizations a simpler way of plugging a thin client device into a server without requiring any network expertise.
NComputing has also released vSpace 5, which adds support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 to its lineup of thin client systems.
NComputing claims to have sold more than 2 million thin client devices thanks in part to increased interest in desktop virtualization and concerns over PC power consumption. An NComputing device, for example, consumes only 1 to 5 watts of power per device compared to a 110 watts for a stand-alone PC.
Pricing for the UC170, which is scheduled to be available before the end of the year, will be less than $99, said company officials. Pricing for NComputing devices currently range from $70 to $200 per virtual desktop.
