Click through to see the tech areas where small and medium-sized businesses plan to invest in the coming year.

When most people think of small-to-medium business and IT, the word "conservative" often comes to mind.

But a recent survey of 406 companies with employees ranging from 10 to 999 employees found that the number of these companies that described themselves as being early adopters of new technologies had increased to 31 percent, which is double what it was a year ago.

The survey, conducted by CompTIA, an association that promotes the interests of IT services companies, was conducted last fall during the depths of the recession. The growing interest in new technologies amongst a segment of companies that are traditionally seen as laggards when it comes to new technologies suggest that not only are these types of companies becoming more comfortable with new technologies, they are also seeing them as helping them compete more effectively.

According to Tim Herbert, vice president of research for CompTIA, the overall survey results show a strong interest in increasing productivity by leveraging technology. To that end, customer relationship management (CRM) topped the list of strategic IT initiatives at 80 percent. To accomplish that goal, however, there appears to be some recognition of the need to upgrade the underlying IT systems, with laptops at 37 percent topping the list of basic IT products that these companies intend to buy.

But when asked about emerging technologies they plan to invest in, managed services and software-as-a-service (SaaS) top the list, as seen in the accompany slide show at 30 percent and 28 percent, respectively. Arguably, neither managed services or SaaS are technologies, but rather ways of delivering technology. If you take those two categories off the list, then LAN hardware, encrypted drives and CRM software all tie for ninth place at 22 percent.

Given that the space between tenth and first place ranges from 22 to 30 percent in the survey, it’s hard to say that one set of emerging technologies is dominant over the others. But what the results do indicate overall is that many more SMB companies today have come to see IT as a strategic set of tools even in the worst of times that allow them to compete more effectively against larger rivals.

And that will be one of the major themes of discussion at an upcoming IT Business Edge MidMarket CIO Forum taking place in Orlando, Fla. next month that you can register to attend here.

Monday, February 08, 2010 Mr. Von'Victor Valentino Rosenchild Founder & CEO of ProsumerSoft LLC Cloud Computing Consulting Company New York, NY 10456 Email: vonrosenchild@prosumersoft.com Company Website: https://www.prosumersoft.... Hello, I would agree with this article, "Top 10 Emerging SMB Technologies". However, I would put Software as a Service in the place of #2. Why? Simply put, the world is in a Global Recession which has touched every life in some way, shape, and form. Moreover, it has had a critical impact on business of every size, especially Small to Mid-Size Businesses, and Start-ups. SMBs and Start-ups are looking for ways to save revenue and increase their profit margin. SMB's want to cut their annual operational cost, and Start-ups want to dramatically reduce the initial cost of starting a business. What this means, is, more and more businesses are looking towards the "Cloud" for the vast resources available their. We have well established Cloud Service Providers, such as Google (Google Apps), Salesforce.com (Force.com, etc..), Amazon (EC2, S3, etc..), NetSuite (SuiteCloud), Vmeware (VCloud), IBM (IBM Cloud Solutions),Canonical (Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC)), SAP (Cloud Services), NetSuite (Cloud Services),Appirio, Zoho, Box.net, Dropbox, and so, so, so many more companies entering the Cloud Service industry, it has turned into a "Red Ocean". However, the more competition within the Cloud Service Industry, the better. Why? Logically to drive down prices and improve on quality of services and products. All of the before mentioned companies and those that have not been mentioned provides some aspect of the Cloud, i.e., Software as a Solution (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), etc.., that it only makes economic sense for SMB's to look towards the cloud instead of buying expensive "hardware and software" to operate their business as the traditional business model has suggested. Yes, SBM's and indeed all businesses of every size will continue to need to buy some hardware (Desktops, Laptops, Notebooks, Servers, Routers, Switches, Firewalls, etc..), however they will not need to invest in maintaining an IT infrastructure and all the support that goes with it, on their own premises. They will be able to cut their IT staff down to half of what it is now, reduce their utility expense to a fraction of the cost annually (electric, water (for cooling), etc..), and have the added benefit of coming into compliance with such regulations as Sarbanes Oxley Section 404 IT Compliance, ISO 17799, ISO9 9000, ISO 27001, HIPPA, etc.., depending on the industry that the business, organization and or agency operates in. My company ProsumerSoft LLC just started a month ago, and within a month, I have seen a substantial Return On Investment (ROI). My conclusion, Cloud Computing and Cloud Service Providers will continue to play a vital role in the growth of businesses in the 21st Century.
