Unisys Closes Mainframe to Smartphone Loop

In addition, Unisys said it is enhancing the security surrounding its mainframe systems, while also moving to introduce a new midrange model, called the Libra 750, based on the company’s proprietary CMOS processor technology.

Bill Maclean, vice president of ClearPath portfolio management for Unisys, says that while it is still early in terms of customer demand for integration smartphone and mainframe applications, the convergence of these two platforms is inevitable, given the rise of transaction-oriented applications on mobile platforms. The first smartphone client that Unisys will add support for is the Apple iPhone, which will be followed by other smartphone platforms based on customer demand. Enhancements to the Unisys mainframe security model are tied to making those smartphone clients more secure by collecting security data in real time, Maclean added.

Separately, Unisys also announced that open source applications based on PHP can now run on its platforms.

Finally, the new Libra 750 adds a mid-range mainframe offering to the ClearPath line that consists of a mix of Unisys CMOS and Intel processor platforms.
