Vidyo Brings Video Conferencing to Desktops

Vidyo, which takes a software-only approach to video conferencing, announced today that it is offering a desktop version of its software for touch-screen enabled Windows and Macintosh systems priced under $1,000.

VidyoDesktop Executive is positioned as an alternative to videoconferencing systems from the Tandberg unit of Cisco, Polycom and others that run on dedicated hardware versus standard PCs, said Marty Hollander, Vidyo senior vice president of marketing.

Hollander adds that as a software-only approach, the Vidyo software allows the underlying PC hardware to be used to run other PC applications, versus requiring a dedicated system to run only one specific application.

Vidyo is built around what the company describes as a “video router” that eliminates the need for dedicated hardware to encode and decode video signals.

Vidyo also has plans to extend its approach to video conferencing out to smartphones once those devices have enough processing power, added Hollander.

As 'all in one' desktop computers from the likes of Dell, HP and Sony become more and more prominent, this approach makes a lot of sense. RADVISION's free SCOPIA Desktop client has been utilizing touch screen devices for a while, and we welcome new solutions by Vidyo and others.
