Virtustream today launched an approach to creating hybrid cloud computing environments, called xStream, that leverages virtualization technologies to make I easier for customers to distribute applications workloads across a private and public cloud.
According to Virtustream CEO Kevin Reid, the xStream platoform leverages scripts and other automated tools for deploying and managing virtual machines that allows customers to have control over deploying application workloads on either their own system or systems managed in the cloud by Virtustream under a common management interface.
That capability effectively creates a self-service portal that allows customers to dynamically provision new system resources in the cloud on demand, he said.

Virtustream is also pursuing a unique simplified pricing model under which customers pays for “infrastructure units” based on the amount of processors, memory and I/O consumed by the application workload. Reid said this approach will provide customers with greater transparency to their actual costs when invoking cloud computing resources.
In addition, Reid said Virtustream will also backup the xStream service with a set of well-defined service level agreements (SLA) that right now are a rarity among providers of cloud computing services.
