Available in beta, the new Cloud Foundry platform is designed to provide a cloud computing service that developers can leverage regardless of the language they want to employ. While Cloud Foundry is managed by the team that developed the Java-based Spring application server that VMware acquired in 2009 when it bought SpringSource, the new service is intended to be a neutral environment when it comes to application programming languages.
According to Rod Johnson, VMware senior vice president for application platform strategy, the problem with most PaaS services is that they are tightly coupled to a specific application development environment. Cloud Foundry, says Johnson, is designed to be an open environment that can be extended to support new programming languages that might be developed in the future.
Cloud Foundry, says Johnson, is an attempt to fulfill the goals outlined in a “Bill of Rights” for application developers in the cloud that VMware released last week.
In addition, VMware announced a Cloud Foundry Micro Cloud, which is a downloadable instance of Cloud Foundry that developers can use to create and test applications on their own desktop systems.
