Wanova Desktop Virtualization Exits Beta

Wanova announced today that its Mirage desktop virtualization software is now generally available.

According to Wanova CTO Issy Ben-Shaul, the Wanova approach to desktop virtualization differs from other approaches in that it doesn’t require a virtual machine on the end point and can be deployed in minutes.

Ben-Shaul said one single image can be centrally managed and then distributed to thousands of end points, thereby lessening the systems management load on the IT department when it comes to managing distributed networks of virtual desktop systems. This capability is especially important given the prevalence of mobile computing systems in the enterprise.

While images are run and managed centrally, the Mirage software distributes individual workloads to each client for processing. This approach allows IT organizations to leverage the processing power of the client, while reducing the systems management overhead associated with desktop virtualization.

The Mirage software effectively deploys and maintains three layers of software. The first is the base image, the second layer manages personalization, and a third layer keeps track of data files and settings. Every time a user logs into the Mirage server on a new machine, all that information can be pushed out to the new desktop.

Pricing for Mirage starts at $210 per desktop.
