Zenprise Takes Remote Control of Smartphones

Rather than trying to walk users through how to fix a problem on their smartphone, Zenprise today is giving IT organizations the ability to remotely take control of a smartphone in order to fix a problem.

The MobileManager platform from Zenprise is a management application specifically designed to allow IT organizations to manage a fleet of smartphones from a diverse number of suppliers. Zenprise software allows IT organizations to manage those smartphones transparently through the carrier networks that service those smartphones, said Ahmed Datoo Zenprise vice president of marketing.

In addition to remotely controlling the smartphone, MobileManager allows IT organizations to turn off network access to any smartphone that has been infected with malware and even remotely enable the device’s ringer in the event a smartphone is misplaced.

According to Datoo, IT organizations want to have the same level of remote control capabilities over smartphones that they currently have over remote PCs. In addition, many of them want to be able to enforce service level agreements (SLAs) with carriers, but can’t do that without establishing some level of visibility into their smartphone usage.

Initially, the remote control capabilities provided by MobileManager will be available on Blackberry devices from Research in Motion. But support for Apple iPhone, iPad, Google Android, Windows Mobile, Palm and webOS devices will be added shortly.
